Chapter 11

Bryn rolled over on her bed to find Angus curled up next to her. She looked around her room, confused.

“How did I get in here?”

She struggled to remember. Everything after the grocery store scare was a blank. She stretched and stroked the cat’s fur. “My life is getting weirder by the day.”

Surro had made pancakes by the time she got ready for work. He kissed her cheek. “Good morning, sunshine.”

“Good morning.” She popped open a soda. “What happened last night? I don’t even remember going to bed.”

“You were pretty upset when we got home from the store. You watched the news, took a shower, went to bed.”

She took a bite of pancake and groaned. “What did you do to these? They’re amazing.”

He wiggled his fingers. “A little bit of magic makes everything better.”

“We close early today for audits. Maybe we can go to the bookstore.” She was anxious to introduce him to her favorite place in the city.

“That would be great. I’ll be ready.”

Her eyes fell on the box as she passed through the living room. Her mind refused to wrap itself around what felt like a memory.

Bryn discovered at work that the positive to the confrontation with Kat at the apartment was that the woman avoided her at the office.

She finished her work early and spent the last hour searching real estate pages. Now that she had Surro, buying a house seemed like a real possibility.

Or is it?

Something bothered her that she couldn’t put a finger on.

She thought about it all the way home. She changed and they headed for the bookstore. As they passed the jewelry store, she saw Teresa motion through the window.

Crap.

With no way to avoid the situation, she led Surro inside and made the introductions. Teresa gave Surro a once over, then gave Bryn a thumbs up when he wasn’t looking.

“I’m glad you happened by. I got that cap, the one we special ordered, and--”

“It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. It’s not something I need.”

Teresa frowned at the interruption. Bryn stared straight at her and gave a little shake of her head. Luckily, her friend got the hint.

“Where are you two off to?”

“Your favorite place in the world.”

“You’re taking him to Lombardi’s?”

Surro turned from the case he had been looking at. “Is that the name of the bookstore?”

Bryn burst out laughing. “No, but we can go there for dinner. Teresa hates the bookstore. I was just teasing her.”

He moved off to check out the watches. Teresa leaned in to Bryn. “I can’t mention the pendant?”

“No. And no, I don’t know why, but someday maybe I’ll be able to explain it.”

“The cap won’t work. I have one more option I’m exploring or it won’t matter because it won’t happen.”

After they perused the bookstore, they cut across the park toward Lombardi’s. Bryn described the food choices, especially the hot fudge. Surro held her hand, which made her smile.

He stopped in the park and picked a random spring flower. His blue eyes sparkled as he kissed the back of her hand.
